A SWISS CHRISTMAS IN THE MOUNTAINS
SCHILLIGER CHRISTMAS MARKET 2020
by Chené Koscielny
For many of us this Christmas may be our first in Geneva or Switzerland as we usually travel to see family and friends in our home countries or go on exotic holidays to sunnier climes.
At the moment it’s difficult to visualise what Christmas will look like and it may seem quite bleak – what with Christmas markets and end-of-year events cancelled.
Amidst all of this uncertainty, though, we’re happy to report that Schilliger Garden Centre plans to offer their spectacular Christmas market again – provided the shops are open again by then, of course! Meanwhile, you can start your Christmas shopping for decorations and gifts in their new online shop. See below.
For those of you who don’t know – every year the garden centre puts on a magical Christmas market in their Gland store – which is a real treat and well worth visiting. It takes 18 months and 6,000 hours of work to build the festive showcase and includes a team of decorators, electricians and designers. The annual market has been a tradition since 1986.
Entry to the market is free.

CHRISTMAS IN THE MOUNTAINS – THIS YEAR’S THEME
This year’s theme is a Swiss Christmas in the mountains and how fitting it is! Visitors will be invited to turn into real mountaineers, crisscrossing mountains and valleys, through three emblematic resorts: first stop, the trendy Zermatt, with skis, toboggans and high altitudes on display. And after a breath of fresh air, enjoy a picnic in the snow. This is also where Santa Claus starts his tour … by gondola!
The next stop takes you to the very chic Gstaad, with a snowy and sparkly après-ski setting. Final stop in Evolène with a dive into Swiss tradition. Charming wood interiors and Swiss colors welcome travelers to a cosy setting. From one chalet to the next, passing through an alpine tunnel, everything is done to transport young and old to the heart of the magic of winter and Christmas.
Follow the marked trails and travel through the wonderful world of Christmas with the widest range of Christmas decorations and products on display, from trees to lighting to baubles and table settings to chalet-style furniture.
Many of the products and all light garlands are designed by Schilliger’s own designers.
In additional to normal opening hours, the Garden Center in Gland will be open every Sunday from November 8 to December 13.
