We try a sensory isolation tank in Geneva and it’s just fabulous.
ORIGIN FLOAT EXPERIENCE, GENEVA
By Alexandra Osváth
Feeling tense or struggling to get through a never-ending to-do list? Let your worries literally float away… with a private floating spa experience in Geneva. You may not get a chance to visit the Dead Sea this summer, but this might even be better.
You’ll slip into a spacious pod and let the silky salt water envelop your body as you drift off into pure and total relaxation. Here’s how our experience went!
LIGHT, AIRY SPA – YOU’RE NOW ON HOLIDAY
When I enter ORIGIN in Geneva, the Portuguese pastel tiles transport me straight to the beach. Sophie and Charlène greet me with big smiles, pour me lemon-infused water and prepare me for my sensory isolation experience.
The relaxation space is an oasis of calm. Gentle light streams through the windows, dancing across spa beds, opaque curtains and colourful tiles. I make a mental note to look closer at some of the intriguing books on the shelves, and can’t wait to try the local teas after my float spa experience.
WHAT IS FLOATING, EXACTLY?
I feel completely weightless as I float in warm salt water, away from all outside distractions. My body no longer has to work to support me or regulate its own temperature, and without any outside noise or light I easily slip into a state of deep relaxation.
Used for millennia, Epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulphate, not only allows you to float but also helps your muscles and joints relax and eases pain.
At ORIGIN, you can float in a private cocoon, an open pool, and even try a duo float spa experience with your partner if you wish.

FLOAT AWAY IN YOUR PRIVATE SPA EXPERIENCE
If you’re a little claustrophobic like me, the idea of a closed pod doesn’t sound ideal. You may remember Sheldon and Amy floating in The Big Bang Theory, and Sheldon testing the panic button just in case… so I ask Sophie to repeat exactly what I need to do (and how the cocoon opens!) a few times, but I needn’t have worried. Ear plugs are provided for sensitive ears like mine, as well as healing ointments for any small scrapes.
Once I shower and slip into the cocoon, I’m pleasantly surprised by how much space I have – about the size of a car’s interior. I stretch out in the silky salt water and close my eyes to soothing meditation music. The lights gently change from one colour to the next and then music and lights dim. I slip deeper and deeper into the silence, gently supported by the warm water. Thoughts glide through my head and gently fade away – until an hour later when the soft music and lights gently wake me up.
I shower with sweet-smelling eco-friendly bath products and blow-dry my hair, all in my private room. I love the locally sourced make-up remover and day cream, which feel soft on my face after my float spa experience.
Afterwards, I pour myself a cup of herbal tea sourced directly from a pharmacy in Fribourg and ease onto a relaxation bed. I feel like I’m far away on a tropical island… there’s no way I’m still in Geneva.
I take home a packet of Epsom salts for my own baths, while I plan my next visit to ORIGIN!
COVID-SAFE CLEANING MEASURES
You’ll be in a private room for your float spa experience. Beyond the naturally disinfecting properties of Epsom salt itself, at ORIGIN the water is emptied and refilled between clients, filtering the water through three different cleaning filters: micron, ultraviolet and carbon, coupled with a hydrogen peroxide solution.
The private float rooms are also cleaned and disinfected between each client.
OUR VERDICT
We highly recommend this no-contact spa experience. From the moment you enter the spa to your flotation and your time in the relaxation space afterwards, you’ll love the entire experience. Even if you’re a little claustrophobic like me, I felt completely at ease in the cocoon. However, there’s also an open pool for one or two people if you prefer. The staff are very friendly and approachable, too.
Especially if you’re trying to keep social distancing to a max, sensory isolation flotation might be the perfect fit for you as you’ll be completely solo while you float.
I can’t wait to go back!
