GENEVA BEER FESTIVAL
CRAFT BEER, FOOD AND MUSIC
by Geli Carney
Did you know Munich’s Oktoberfest actually happens mostly in September?
Maybe in order to avoid a diary clash with the Geneva Beer Festival, which actually does take place during the first weekend of October!
What Geneva Beer Festival may lack in world record-breaking Stein-carrying attempts (29, if you didn’t know) it more than makes up with over 200 varieties of craft beer on offer – supplied by 40 different craft beer breweries – and surely enough to satisfy the thirstiest of our Bavarian friends. Some of the producers, such as Biere du Lac and L’Apaisee are regular favourites, but others, like Valais-based brewery Hoppy People will be making their debut appearance – be sure to give them a warm welcome!
With DJs, live music, over 20 different food trucks and food and beer pairing workshops on offer, the festival promises a really fun environment for getting better acquainted with some of the participating craft breweries, many of whom are based either here in Geneva or from around the Rhone-Alpes region.
WHEN?
The festival opens at 6pm on Friday 6th October 2017 and runs through to 7pm Sunday 8th October 2017.
It takes place at Pavilion Sicli, route des Acacias, a cool cultural space reclaimed from a disused fire-extinguisher factory and famous for its concrete sloping roof (trade-mark of celebrated Swiss civil-engineer Heinz Isler)
Tram 15 runs right past the venue so getting there (and more importantly getting home) is easy.
Entrance is free (though you will need to purchase a 2chf beer ‘glass’ – refundable on return).
Finally, they’re a super-inclusive bunch at the beer festival so even if hops aren’t your thing, you will find local wine producers and cocktails on offer too.
