Alceste, the misanthrope, loves Célimène who loves the court… And as he was the most loyal and upstanding of men, except for one small fault – his complete lack of tolerance for the behaviour of others – Molière couldn’t help but create this masterpiece.
“The ‘court society’ had become the primary elitist institution in France at the time Molière was writing his plays. The need to establish and maintain one’s position in this social structure meant people related to one another by imposing and enduring the bizarre constraints of a rigid hierarchy and rigorous etiquette. In TheMisanthrope, Molière denounces the cynical appetites of a society in which climbing the social ladder means pushing someone else down, and the game of ambitions and agendas shatters the thin veneer of politeness. The murkiness of the courtly world sullies all human interactions and undermines the very foundation of poetic art!” Alain Françon, director
