TASTING FOOD FROM AROUND THE WORLD IN SELF-ISOLATION
Support home chefs in Geneva – Nik’s Fudo
by Chené Koscielny
One of the things we miss most during self-isolation is the freedom to travel and explore exotic destinations.
One way to fulfill this desire until such time as the travel ban is lifted, is to try authentic food from around the world. This is what Nik’s Fudo in Geneva aims to provide – with their home-cooked meals delivered to your door.
NOTE: Delivery is FREE during the Covid-19 lockdown period.
NOT YOUR TYPICAL INDIAN MEAL
This week we enjoyed a typical meal cooked in the home kitchen of Lakshmi, a grandmother who hails from Kerala in South India, which transported us away from our lockdown misery.
The meal consisted of a starter called vada – a spiced split-pea doughnut followed by a main course called lidli –lentil and rice cake eaten with a sambar, a somewhat spicy lentil and vegetable soup and a coconut chutney sauce.
Discovering the unusual flavours was a treat. We could almost hear the waves crushing and smell the sea. This is not your typical Indian take-away meal, but something different and very authentic – imagine being invited in for a home-cooked meal by a local in the village during your travels.

AUTHENTIC HOME COOKED MEALS

Nik’s Fudo was started in 2017 by Nikhil Masilamani (Indian) and his wife Nishani (Sri Lankan), after they struggled to find authentic food from their home countries and food they tasted during their travels on the Geneva restaurant circuit. The couple, who have been in Geneva for many years, discovered a big underground international food circuit and decided to open it up and legalise it with the creation of Nik’s Fudo.
They built up a community of home chefs (mainly migrants who have lived in Geneva for many years) from countries including Korea, Senegal, Afghanistan, Brazil, Ghana, Mexico and many more and started delivering food.
Until the Coronavirus struck, they were focusing their efforts on businesses, offering food stands in international companies.
They also had a pop-up restaurant in local organization FOOUND.
“The difference between us and other international restaurants is that the meals are truly home-cooked and are often recipes passed down from the chef’s grandmother, mother or other relatives. The food is truly authentic and not mass produced,” explains Nikhil.
During self-isolation they’ve refocused their efforts and teamed up with a local delivery company, offering meals to individuals for home delivery.
The prices for the meals are around CHF4 for a starter or dessert and CHF15 to CHF18 for a main course. offering great value for money.
