AUBES: A musical experience at sunrise
by Alexandra Osváth
It’s almost out of a movie: the sun rises over Lake Geneva, basking the musicians and their audience in an ethereal light. Mellow beats gradually grow stronger as the day breaks. This is AUBES, a breathtaking experience at Bains des Pâquis.
WORTH GETTING UP EARLY
I’m not an early riser, but AUBES is truly worth it. I attended the first day of the free concert series, and even the musicians seemed impressed by the large crowd that had turned up for their 6am performance.
I joined a diverse group of fellow Genevans and expats gathered in a wide semi-circle around Les Cissokho Brothers, who played traditional music from Senegal.
UNIQUE EXPERIENCE
The musicians explained the history of their instruments, the kora and the calabash, and taught us a line to sing along with them. The lead singer encouraged the audience to clap in rhythm with the music and then invited us to dance. After a hesitant start, the entire audience was swaying to the beat, completely immersed in this unique experience.
Twelve years after it was founded, AUBES is more popular than ever. This summer’s line-up features musicians from all over the world, offering something for everyone. Come discover new music or groove to your favourites in an otherworldly setting.
Afterwards, grab a coffee or breakfast (bircher muesli or tartines/toast with nutella or jam) at the buvette on-site, or take a dip in the lake. It’s an experience worth getting up for!
