10 TAKEAWAY MENUS TO TRY IN LOCKDOWN IN GENEVA

by Chené Koscielny and Alana Dunsmore

We love nothing more than eating out, as you know – and lockdown is seriously cramping our style, but luckily some of our favourite restaurants in Geneva have responded creatively to the crisis – offering great take-aways options.

This has cheered us up no end. Try some of the foodie options from street food to gourmet meals and you’ll not only feel less deprived, but you’ll also be supporting an industry in crisis.

1. STREET GOURMET

One of our favourite street food options in Geneva has to be Street Gourmet at 10 Rue du Prince, Eaux-Vives. They specialize in healthy and fine street food with a Mediterranean inspiration. They also have a second venue at 6 Rue de la Terrassière, as well as two new pick-up points in Bel-Air and Coutance. See website for more info.

Here you can order delicious homemade wraps and falafels, pulled pork brioches and yummy healthy salads and bowls.

TOP TIP: They also offer a New York family kit – with a selection of yummy New York-inspired options, including spicy beef, pulled pork, mini-buns, fries and onion rings to build your own burgers!  Great option for the family.

Read our review of their picnic options.

TAKE-AWAY

Street Gourmet is using a click and collect method for their take away. You can oder on their website or app for pick-up. For delivery you can access their menu through Ubereats or SMOOD.

2. EAT ME, Eaux-Vives

lockdown-take-away-restaurants-geneva

Another menu perfect for exploring exotic dishes is Eat Me. The concept is to serve an inspiring mix of international cuisine on small plates.

The original menu drew upon the ‘food souvenirs’ collected during the world travels of the restaurant’s founder, Serena Shamash.  Now, with two restaurants and a great group of chefs, servers, and bartenders, Serena curates food souvenirs from the entire talented team. Read our recent review of Eat Me’s food souvenirs.

During lockdown they offer a selection of their top dishes, including their famous jerky chicken – read the inspiration for this dish in our food souvenirs article mentioned above.

The Barbacoa Marquitos Kit of 5 – sounds delish – compose your own tacos with their own signature spicy barbacoa beef with all the trimmings. For home assembly. We like!

TAKEAWAY

Tuesdays through Saturdays from 18h00 to 21h30. You can either collect your own food with a 10% discount or order using their delivery partners.

3. LE FLACON, Carouge

If you’re in the mood for gourmet food that never disappoints and is totally reasonable by Geneva standards – you can’t do better than Le Flacon.

This Michelin-starred restaurant is one of our firm favourites – read our review of their business lunch.

During the lockdown they are inviting themselves into your home – with their new take-away gourmet formulas:

Enjoy a relaxed lunch – collect your burger and frites and their signature chocolate dessert between 11h30 and 13h30 from Tuesday to Saturday without reservation!

In the evening – for something a bit more fancy – order in their gourmet 3-course dinner from Tuesday to Saturday to be collected between 17h and 19h. The evening option has to be booked by SMS or Whatsapp on 078 907 38 89 before noon on the same day.

4. MOLOKAI, Eaux-Vives

lockdown-take-away-restaurants-geneva

Looking for inspiration straight from sunny Hawaii and feel like eating something healthy? – a good poké bowl will hit the spot.

We recently tried Molokai’s poké bowls for a picnic – and of course, if the weather plays along, picnics are still a good option during lockdown – here is our earlier review.

Compose your own bowl or choose from their options, which include jungle chicken and tropical beef, as well as the usual fresh salmon and tuna options.  Their ingredients are fresh and these bowls are just what the doctor ordered.

The full menu is available for pick-up or delivery Monday to Friday.

5. BRASSERIE MAX, Eaux-Vives

A French brasserie with a modern-twist – we love the innovative menu and can highly recommend this restaurant for delicious comfort food that is also bursting with goodness.

I highly, highly recommend the vegetarian version of the Pain Perdu which features a slightly sweet homemade brioche with melted goats cheese and avocado, as well as fresh fig and nuts – it is an amazingly beautiful combination.  The burgers are also a great choice.

6. KHORA, Eaux-Vives

lockdown-take-away-restaurants-geneva

If you’re dreaming of the lapping waves and sun, some Greek staples with a Mediterranean fusion twist from this Greek taverna will lift your spirits.

Why not share some dips (tzatziki, taramasalata and roasted aubergine dip) with grilled pita bread or opt for a satisfying moussaka with beef mine and aubergine or a chicken or pork souvlaki.

7. BYLÙ, Geneva Centre

Who doesn’t love a good Italian? Luigas has been one of our favourite family restaurants for years.   ByLÙ (by the same owners as Luiga) just opposite the Alhambra, offers affordable, non-stop Italian fare. The focus is on fresh, homemade Italian dishes, which can be enjoyed as takeaways or delivered to your door.

The menu offers Italian staples such as pizzas and pastas, as well as paninos, club sandwiches and a choice of main courses. Try a Picantella pizza, with a signature crispy crust – topped with tomato sauce, fior di latte, piquante salami and pecorino or a Miracolati – spaghetti with tomato, basil and virgin olive oil or Napolese Nerano , spaghetti with courgette frites and provolone cheese. Tasty and satisfying!

8. MAMA & ZITA, Nations

lockdown-take-away-restaurants-geneva

Mama & Zita in Geneva’s Nations area perfectly combines different styles and flavours. The chefs at Mama & Zita are from Italy and Morocco and some of their friendly staff members lived in Greece. Together, they create beautifully presented and delicious Mediterranean-inspired dishes. This is a great option for a shared mezze platter, which makes you travel from Greece to Morocco and Lebanon. Their pizzas are divine with a beautiful crust – perfect on a grey lockdown day.

9. HELIOS, Eaux-Vives

Now we’re talking! This Mediterranean restaurant is offering something very different. They will come and cook for you at home, serve your food – and do all the cleaning up!

What a lovely idea and a real treat. Yes, please!

This is obviously a bit more on the gourmet side, but the dishes sound divine – including a steamy delicious sounding shellfish casserole and a wild boar dish with a cognac sauce accompanied by polenta, brussels sprouts and dried apricots – for two people.
