Arthur Penn is one of the precursors of the New Hollywood, the impetus given to American cinema in the late 1960s by a handful of daring directors who loved creative freedom. Known for his great box office success with Bonnie and Clyde, Penn is also the author of many masterpieces, such as Little Big Man. A funny Voltairian tale, this film showed that, in the Wild West, civilization was not on the side of Col. Custer but rather of the Cheyenne… And what about the little-known Four Friends, who evokes, through allusions, the assassination of President Kennedy, racial segregation, the Vietnam War and thus questions the “American dream”? or the Chase, a tragic portrait of an America in the grip of its demons, with Jane Fonda, Marlon Brando and Robert Redford? All these films are to be discovered at the Cinemas du Grütli from 27 November to 17 December.
To accompany this retrospective, we welcome, on December 13 and 14, director Jonathan Nossiter (Sunday Signs and Wonders and obviously Mondovino), Arthur Penn’s admirer. He will tell us about his friendship with Penn (who passed away in 2010), present a handful of his films and show Searching for Arthur, an interview he shot in Manhattan with him.

Global Migration Film Festival proudly introduces an amazing film ‘STYX’ : A busy doctor sails across the Atlantic from Gibraltar to Ascension Island – fulfilling a life dream, at last. But everything changes as she approaches a damaged, overloaded boat of migrants and refugees, pleading for their lives as the seas turn rough. Instinctively, she begins to organise help to save these people from drowning. But her efforts are in vain. Styx depicts a woman’s transformation as she is abruptly torn away from her comfortable life, and as she realises the limits of her own importance and of the empathy her world is capable of.
“Should a lone yachtswoman act when authorities tell her to sail away? Wolfgang Fischer’s drama steers into Europe’s migrant influx with conviction.” – The Guardian
*The film (2018, 94 minutes, in English with French and German subtitles) will be followed by a panel discussion.
*The screening is part of the Global Migration Film Festival and it is organised in partnership with the Geneva Graduate Institute
*Entry is free, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

ON DECEMBER 6th from 9pm, THE RELICS, a Geneva-based cover band playing a mixture of pop and rock from bands like Muse, Ben Harper, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Doors will be playing at the Lady Godiva Pub in Plainpalais.
